Summer-Winter House: Media Relations Event

This media relations program started with a mountain bike. Four years later, it has become one of the industry's most successful branding programs. The client – the mountain bike company – started working with us to get some needed introductions to the country's top gear editors. OK, great. But with most gear editors in New York City, it just didn't feel right to send test bikes to... a skyscraper. A skyscraper?

At first it didn't have a name. We just invited a bunch of friends – gear editors and stylists – to come to a house on Martha's Vineyard and stay three nights at a time to live and test and enjoy these brands in the environment in which they were meant to be experienced. We set them up with guides and athletes to help them optimize their time on the island. And then – most importantly – we left them alone. We let the products communicate the brand. We let the experiences and treks communicate the brand. We let the culture communicate the brand.

We believe great PR starts with replicating the unforgettable connection people make between a brand and the experience or culture that surrounds it. Today, our innovative program allows us to bring dozens of brands to life for top editors and reporters. For warm weather brands, The Summer House is a four-week summer program in Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket where top editors and stylists come for three-day stints to experience brands that are authentic to the outdoor lifestyle – absent the pressures of PR people whispering in their ears. Success has spawned its colder counterpart, The Winter House, in Park City, Utah, focusing on cold weather brands.

A bevy of elite members of the media, including People, Men's Health, Lucky, Glamour, VH-1, Self, Forbes, Outside, Martha Stewart, Playboy, Maxim, Delta Sky, Women's Health, CNN and NBC Today have come and – without pushy PR people – repeatedly covered the products they've tested.
